Spice Cake
Grandma Smith

1 cup molasses
½ cup shortening
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp. ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/8 tsp cloves
½ tsp nutmeg
3 ½ cups sifted flour

Boil molasses and shortening together and cool. Cream sugar and eggs until fluffy. Add molasses mixture, eggs and milk. Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with liquid. Pour into a greased and floured 9x13” pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. When cool cover top with sugar.
